About Tecate crossing

Tecate is the quiet third crossing between San Diego and Tijuana — a small rural port located in the town of Tecate, Baja California, about 40 miles east of downtown Tijuana. Unlike its larger neighbors, Tecate rarely exceeds 30 minutes even on busy weekends, and standard-lane waits under 10 minutes are routine on weekday mornings.

When to use Tecate

The math is straightforward: Tecate itself is always fast, but it adds roughly 45–60 minutes of driving each way from San Diego via SR-94. For most San Diegans, Tecate only makes sense when San Ysidro and Otay Mesa are both over 90 minutes, or when you're already in eastern San Diego County — Jamul, Alpine, Pine Valley, or eastern El Cajon.

For residents of the Tecate / Rosarito inland corridor, it's often the default local crossing regardless of wait at other ports.

Lane types

Standard: open to any valid traveler. Tecate does not have a Ready Lane or SENTRI lane for passenger vehicles.

Pedestrian: small walk-across facility. Almost always under 10 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What are Tecate's hours?

5 AM to 11 PM daily, for both passenger vehicles and pedestrians. If you arrive outside these hours, you'll need to use San Ysidro or Otay Mesa instead.

How long is the drive from San Diego?

Roughly 1 hour from downtown San Diego via SR-94 in light traffic, 1 hour 15 minutes during rush. From North County or Temecula, it's often comparable to driving to San Ysidro.

Is Tecate safer than other crossings?

The crossing itself is run by CBP and is as secure as any other US port of entry. Tecate city is generally considered quiet. As with any Baja travel, stick to main highways after dark and exercise standard traveler caution.
