How long did your southbound crossing take?
Brownsville, Texas is the southernmost border city in the continental US, sitting directly across the Rio Grande from Matamoros, Tamaulipas. Four bridges connect the two cities:
Gateway International — downtown, 24 hours. Heavy pedestrian volume.
B&M (Brownsville & Matamoros) — downtown, 24 hours. Mixed pedestrian and vehicle.
Veterans International (Los Tomates) — east of downtown, 6 AM to midnight. Primary vehicle bridge with the most lanes.
Los Indios — 20 miles northwest, 6 AM to 10 PM. Less congested, used by commercial and rural commuters.
Veterans International has dedicated SENTRI and Ready Lane lanes. SENTRI waits at Brownsville are typically under 15 minutes regardless of overall congestion.
For passenger vehicles, Veterans International is usually the fastest because it has more lanes and less foot traffic. For pedestrians, Gateway is the most convenient downtown option.
Saturdays and Sundays for tourist and shopping traffic, weekday morning commuter peaks 6–8 AM, and major US holiday returns.
